Avery Road Animal Hospital was established in February of 1980. The Avery Road name was chosen to help attract clients from the surrounding areas, despite the location of the hospital on Main St. The veterinarian who named the office only practiced in it for less than one year. Dr. Richard Vesper purchased the practice, which at that time had less than 50 clients and was housed in an 80+ year old small Hilliard cottage. The initial facility had one exam room, a front reception area, a surgery that was separated by several rooms from the kennel and treatment area.

In those days, Hilliard was known primarily as an agricultural area but was about to burst into growth. For the first seven years, Dr. Vesper practiced solo with one or two other full or part time employees. The practice grew at a steady rate. In 1987 Dr. Edward Huschart joined the already busy practice and within a few years time, they were ready to hire a third veterinarian. During these years, several technicians and receptionists added their skills to the growth of the hospital. In 1990 it was decided more space was needed. For a brief period of time, other property was considered to build a new practice. Instead, a major addition and renovation project ensued and a new facility was born on Main Street, which still held the charm of the Old Hilliard area. Dr. Jennifer McLaughlin joined the practice in 1993 as the practice continued to grow. In 2004, a fourth veterinarian joined the practice, Dr. A. North Fletcher.

By this time, the small animal hospital on Main Street had outgrown its facility. The four exam rooms were consistently full and the staff worked in cramped quarters. It became evident that in order for Avery Road Animal Hospital to remain an efficient hospital, delivering the quality of medicine we desired, more room was essential. A new property was chosen on Cemetery Road, off Brown Park Drive. It was thought this location would continue to serve all current clients due to its proximity to our original building, but would also be more convenient for the clients who traveled I-270 to reach us.

In May 2005, the staff of Avery Road Animal Hospital gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony and the project began. After many long months of waiting, December 2005 marked the opening of the new Avery Road Animal Hospital. Once established at the new location, it was decided that the name "Avery Road Animal Hospital" would be changed to "Avery Animal Hospital." The new name would not confuse the location of the business, but it would also hold the tradition of the original business. During 2006, the business name was gradually changed.
